JoyRide Logistics Uses Tenstreet to Hire 487 Drivers with 1 Recruiter
For JoyRide Logistics, speed matters. That’s not only regarding on-time delivery to accommodate the needs of a large online retailer; JoyRide must also hire new drivers at a rapid rate. At any given time, the retailer may have a project that requires hiring 20-30 drivers in less than a week.
Prior to using Tenstreet, JoyRide looked to a third-party provider to manage driver qualification files, schedule drug screenings, request background checks, and ensure drivers had everything needed to begin work. When the provider simply couldn’t keep up with the pace their biggest client required, JoyRide sought other solutions.
“The process with the third-party provider was very slow,” said JoyRide assistant safety director Alma Delic. “But when we got Tenstreet and saw what opportunities there were, we decided to take recruiting in-house.”While that may seem like a big, time-consuming change, Delic said it was seamless. “It was a very easy transition since Tenstreet is so user-friendly,” she said. “We didn’t have any issues.” In the two years since JoyRide started using Tenstreet, the company has brought both recruiting and safety in-house, significantly reducing days-to-hire, boosting applicant and qualified lead numbers, and improving CSA scores, while also saving time and money.
HIRING 487 DRIVERS WITH A SINGLE RECRUITER
Using Tenstreet has streamlined JoyRide’s hiring process. Instead of juggling multiple vendors and systems, everything related to hiring drivers — like DQ files, background checks, MVRs, and employment verification — is stored and accessed in Tenstreet.
“The fact that everything is in one place and our recruiter doesn’t have to juggle between software or contact another provider to have drivers complete all of the documents was a big wow factor for us.” Delic said.
In a good month, the third-party recruiter hired 5-10 drivers. Since implementing Tenstreet two years ago, JoyRide has hired 487 drivers with a single recruiter, an average of about 20 drivers per month.
INCREASING APPLICATIONS, QUALIFIED LEADS, AND DRIVER RETENTION
Another partner JoyRide uses to streamline recruiting is sister company Orior Media, which is responsible for advertising job openings and funneling qualified leads to JoyRide’s recruiter.
When JoyRide brought on Tenstreet, Orior Media decided to pilot a new program: funneling lead information directly into the recruiter’s Tenstreet dashboard.
Regardless of whether a lead came in from social media, a job board, or other source, if
an applicant had completed an IntelliApp–Tenstreet’s job application–before, their
information would automatically populate into the JoyRide application. Auto-populating
forms helped Orior Media outperform job sites and other third-party agencies by bringing
in approximately 70% more applicants.
Integrating with Tenstreet also allowed JoyRide to add a pre-qualification question about
how many years of experience a driver has, which saved recruiters time spent talking with
applicants who weren’t qualified. Hiring more qualified drivers has increased the
company’s retention rate by 28% in just one year.
“Alma’s team is getting more qualified leads and a higher quantity of leads within their
dashboard, and they don’t have to switch between different platforms or look for leads from various lists and input them into Tenstreet manually,” said Ajdin Balihodzic, digital
marketing specialist for Orior Media. “Our process was built mainly thanks to Tenstreet’s
ability to integrate with the system and make sure the results we were bringing in were
actually helping the recruiters. We’ve been able to optimize the entire process to achieve
over 82% qualified leads that are coming in to the company.”
Beyond saving recruiters significant time, integrating Orior Media’s processes with
Tenstreet has also allowed JoyRide recruiters to follow up with candidates faster.
“The entire system is instant. From the driver’s standpoint, he clicks an ad, he clicks ‘Submit,’
and within 30 seconds, he gets a phone call. You don’t get that anywhere else,” Balihodzic
said. “Now JoyRide has a lean setup where they don’t have to have multiple recruiters
handling what one could do. They’ve been able to maximize the entire system, both from
the side of advertising and from the recruitment and safety side.”
Orior Media’s pilot program was so successful that the company is replicating it with
dozens of other carriers.
“This pilot project has turned our company around; we’ve been able to transform it into a
service,” Balihodzic said. “We’re working with 50 or 60 carriers right now, and all of them
have been vastly outperforming all the other sources of leads, and the entire system is
fully optimized to the carrier.”
SPEEDING UP SAFETY MANAGEMENT
In addition to streamlining recruiting, JoyRide has also used Tenstreet to improve multiple aspects of its safety program.
Prior to using Tenstreet, JoyRide used a third party to manage safety and compliance. But when Delic learned her team could easily monitor DQF expirations, CSA scores, MVRs, and more in Tenstreet, the company decided to bring the safety function inhouse, too.
“After we got Tenstreet, we decided to establish our own safety and compliance department and started hiring safety officers. Our focus was to have all our DQ files in one place to make sure we’re fully compliant according to FMCSA rules and regulations,” Delic said. “Before, we monitored DQF expirations every six months, and it took us a lot of time to prepare files for bulk clearinghouse orders. Now, I just click on ‘DQF monitoring’ to see if we’re fully compliant. I don’t have to go into different folders to check every single driver. We have everything pre-setup when it comes to expiration dates.”
USING TENSTREET TO IMPROVE CSA SCORES
Maintaining good CSA scores is important to every safety-conscious carrier, but for JoyRide, it can mean the difference between keeping or losing business.
“A couple years ago our CSA scores, especially our hours-of-service scores, were pretty high, which affected business with clients who have certain thresholds we need to meet. We were obviously monitoring it, but I’d have to check the FMCSA page and download multiple spreadsheets to see where we were losing points,” Delic said. “Now, Tenstreet pulls in the data so we can see where we need to improve. Tenstreet also helped us use formulas to know our CSA scores months before the FMCSA publishes them.”
Gaining this visibility has helped JoyRide develop initiatives to address safety issues and improve CSA scores. One such initiative is to assign corrective actions to drivers via Tenstreet, which includes Tenstreet training videos that correspond to the areas in which drivers need coaching.
BECOMING TENSTREET CHEERLEADERS
Delic’s experience with Tenstreet has turned her into a major supporter of the platform.
“Whenever people ask about recruiting or safety, my reply is, ‘Have you tried Tenstreet? Because you should. And you should take the full package, because it’s not just recruiting; your safety team will be ten times better,’” Delic said.
Orior Media’s Balihodzic is also a Tenstreet advocate.
“I have recommended Tenstreet to many other carriers we work with. There’s no tool out there that covers that much depth and provides so many tools to a safety and recruiting team as Tenstreet does,” he said. “And with the ability to connect with them and have their team fully available whenever you need support or you need some help to achieve a specific goal, like integrations or getting specific data into the tool, I don’t think there’s another software that can do it at that level.”
