Case Study: Bison USA

Bison USA Applies Tenstreet Solutions for Recruiting and Post-Recruiting Success

When Kelli Boyle, director of recruiting, joined Bison USA in 2022, it was only a few months after Canada-based Bison Transport merged two small carriers to form Bison USA. Less than a year later, two more trucking companies were folded into the company.

Before joining Bison USA, Boyle had spent many years using Tenstreet in her previous recruiting role and loved it for its ease-of-use and efficiency.

She liked Tenstreet so much that, for her, having Tenstreet in place was a condition for accepting the Bison USA role.

“If Bison USA didn’t use Tenstreet, I probably wouldn’t have come over or I would have said, ‘We’re using Tenstreet as soon as I start,’ because there isn’t another product that even compares to the capabilities,” Boyle said.

All four of the trucking companies comprising Bison USA used Tenstreet before they were acquired, which Boyle said was a major advantage.

“It made it very easy, from a recruiting standpoint and from an applicant tracking standpoint, to merge platforms together,” Boyle said. “We just worked with our account reps and our salesperson, and they folded them right in, which was so convenient.”

Today, Bison USA relies on Tenstreet for its full recruiting cycle.

START-TO-FINISH RECRUITING

Bison USA uses Tenstreet for all recruiting activities leading up to orientation.

The company uses the platform to bring in leads and applications, communicate with candidates, review applications, run consumer reports (background checks), and collect, manage, and acquire signatures on required documentation.

“Anything related to onboarding that gets candidates through the process and hired happens in Tenstreet,” Boyle said.

In addition to streamlining recruiting functions, Tenstreet also helps Boyle track and report on recruiter effectiveness. Metrics Boyle tracks include:

  • How many drivers each recruiter hires
  • What level of driver experience recruiters are hiring
  • Turnover by recruiter
  • Total number of days to hire
  • The number of days candidates spend during each phase of the hiring process

Reports make it easy to see how each recruiter is performing.

We use reporting for coaching opportunities. It has been really valuable because data doesn’t lie — there aren’t any feelings there,” Boyle explained.

STREAMLINING OPERATIONS THROUGH AUTOMATION

Boyle’s team also uses Tenstreet to help departments beyond recruiting be successful.

For instance, Tenstreet sends out an autogenerated report that shows if the operations teams have assigned trucks and fleet managers for the following week’s onboarding and orientation classes.

“These reports help us make sure the onboarding and orientation go off without a hitch,” Boyle explained. “We also want to make sure that if new hires have questions, like, ‘What does my truck look like?’ or someone wants to know who the employee’s manager is, we can answer them.”

Boyle also created a customized checklist that she runs and sends to operations every Thursday so they can see who is in the new pool of drivers coming in during the next and subsequent weeks.

“We use reports to give everyone the information they need to be set up for success, whether that’s recruiters, drivers, or operations,” Boyle said. “Tenstreet gives you the ability to create a report for anything you want.”
